The Chemical Evolution of the Galaxy: the two-infall model

چکیده

In this paper we present a new chemical evolution model for the Galaxy which assumes two main infall episodes for the formation of halo-thick disk and thin disk, respectively. We do not try to take into account explicitly the evolution of the halo since our model is better suited for computing the evolution of the disk (thick plus thin) but we implicitly assume that the timescale for the formation of the halo was of the same order as the timescale for the formation of the thick disk. The formation of the thin-disk is much longer than that of the thick disk, implying that the infalling gas forming the thin-disk comes not only from the thick disk but mainly from the intergalactic medium. The timescale for the formation of the thin-disk is assumed to be a function of the galactocentric distance, leading to an inside-out picture for the Galaxy building. The model takes into account the most up to date nucleosynthesis prescriptions and adopts a threshold in the star formation process which naturally produces a hiatus in the star formation rate at the end of the thick disk phase, as suggested by recent observations. The model results are compared with an extended set of observational constraints both for the solar neighbourhood and the whole disk. Among these constraints, the tightest one is the metallicity distribution of the G-dwarf stars for which new data are now available. Our model ts very well these new data. The model predicts also the evolution of the gas mass, the star formation rate, the supernova rates and the abundances of 16 chemical elements as functions of time and galactocentric distance. We show that in order to reproduce most of these constraints a timescale 1 Gyr for the (halo)-thick-disk and of 8 Gyr for the thin-disk formation in the solar vicinity are required.

Galactic chemical abundance evolution in the solar neighborhood up to the Iron peak

We have developed a detailed standard chemical evolution model to study the evolution of all the chemical elements up to the iron peak in the solar vicinity. We consider that the Galaxy was formed through two episodes of exponentially decreasing infall, out of extragalactic gas. In a first infall episode, with a duration of ∼ 1 Gyr, the halo and the thick disk were assembled out of primordial g...

In this work we explore the effects of adopting initial mass functions (IMFs) variable in time on the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. In order to do that we adopt a chemical evolution model which assumes two main infall episodes for the formation of the Galaxy and which proved to be successful in reproducing the majority of the observational constraints, at least for the case of a constant IM...

Galactic Chemical Evolution and the Abundances of Lithium, Beryllium and Boron

We have included Galactic Cosmic Ray Nucleosynthesis (GCRN) in a complete Chemical Evolution Model that takes into account 76 stable isotopes from hydrogen to zinc. Any successful LiBeB evolution model should also be compatible with other observational constraints like the age-metallicity relation, the G-dwarf distribution or the evolution of other elements. At the same time, we have checked ho...

The Effects of a Variable Imf on the Chemical Evolution of the Galaxy

In this work we explore the effects of adopting an initial mass function (IMF) variable in time on the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. In order to do that we adopt a chemical evolution model which assumes two main infall episodes for the formation of the Galaxy. We study the effects on such a model of different IMFs. First, we use a theoretical one based on the statistical description of the ...

Inside-Out Infall Formation of Disk Galaxies: Do Predictions Differ from Models without Size Evolution?

We develop an idealized inside-out formation model for disk galaxies to include a realistic mix of galaxy types and luminosities that provides a fair match to the traditional observables. The predictions of our infall models are compared against identical models with no-size evolution by generating fully realistic simulations of the HDF, from which we recover the angular size distributions. We ...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...
